The Kill Team (2019)

“The Kill Team” (2019), directed by Dan Krauss, is a tense and morally charged war drama based on true events. The film explores the psychological and ethical dilemmas faced by soldiers in combat, particularly focusing on a disturbing incident involving a U.S. Army unit in Afghanistan. It is based on Krauss’s 2013 documentary of the same name, which detailed the real-life story of war crimes committed by a group of soldiers who became known as “The Kill Team.”

The story centers on Private Andrew Briggman (Nat Wolff), a young and idealistic soldier who is deployed to Afghanistan. Initially eager to serve his country, Briggman’s worldview is shattered when he witnesses his unit, led by the charismatic and morally corrupt Sergeant Deeks (Alexander Skarsgård), engaging in violent and unethical behavior. Deeks manipulates the soldiers into committing acts of brutality against innocent Afghan civilians under the guise of wartime necessity.

As Briggman becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the actions of his comrades, he faces an internal struggle between loyalty to his unit and his own sense of right and wrong. His attempts to speak out or resist are met with growing hostility, not only from Deeks but from his fellow soldiers, who view him as a potential traitor. The tension escalates as Briggman is pushed to the brink, fearing both for his life and his moral integrity.

One of the film’s strengths is its portrayal of the psychological effects of combat on young soldiers. Nat Wolff gives a compelling performance as Briggman, portraying his internal conflict with subtlety and nuance. Alexander Skarsgård, on the other hand, delivers a chilling performance as Sergeant Deeks, whose manipulation and ruthlessness create an atmosphere of fear and paranoia within the unit.
