“Army of the Dead” (2021), directed by Zack Snyder, is a high-octane zombie heist film that blends action, horror, and a bit of dark comedy. Set in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas, the film follows a group of mercenaries who are hired to retrieve $200 million from a casino vault—right in the middle of a quarantine zone filled with zombies.

The story kicks off after a zombie outbreak has turned Las Vegas into a walled-off, infested city. Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a former war hero who fought in the zombie war, is approached by billionaire Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) to assemble a team and pull off the heist before the government nukes the city. Ward gathers a diverse crew, including his estranged daughter Kate (Ella Purnell), helicopter pilot Marianne (Tig Notaro), and safecracker Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer), among others.

One of the film’s unique twists on the zombie genre is the introduction of two distinct types of zombies: the usual mindless “shamblers” and a smarter, faster breed known as “alphas,” led by a fearsome zombie king named Zeus. This hierarchy adds an extra layer of tension as the team navigates not only the physical dangers of the mission but also the organized, predatory intelligence of the alpha zombies.
