Mortal Kombat introduces viewers to an ancient tournament held on the mystical island of Shang Tsung (played by the legendary Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). Every generation, fighters from Earth are summoned to battle against the warriors of Outworld in a competition that could decide the fate of humanity. Victory for Outworld means the invasion and destruction of Earth.
The film follows three main protagonistsโLiu Kang (Robin Shou), a martial artist seeking revenge for his brother’s death; Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson), a Special Forces officer on a mission to capture the criminal Kano; and Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), a Hollywood star determined to prove his combat skills are real. Together, they are trained by Lord Raiden (Christopher Lambert), the Thunder God and protector of Earthrealm, as they face off against iconic characters from the franchise, including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Goro.
