In the post-apocalyptic thriller Elevation, director George Nolfi presents a world where humanity’s survival hinges on altitude. Three years prior, formidable creatures known as Reapers emerged from subterranean sinkholes, decimating 95% of the human population. These relentless predators dominate areas below 8,000 feet, forcing the remaining survivors to seek refuge in high-altitude enclaves.

The narrative centers on Will (Anthony Mackie), a devoted father residing in the elevated sanctuary of Lost Gulch Refuge in Colorado’s Front Range, with his ailing son, Hunter (Danny Boyd Jr.), who suffers from a debilitating lung condition. As Hunter’s health deteriorates due to a dwindling supply of oxygen filters, Will faces a harrowing decision. To save his son, he must venture into the perilous lowlands, teeming with Reapers, to procure the necessary medical supplies.

Accompanying Will on this treacherous journey are Nina (Morena Baccarin), a former scientist burdened by past tragedies and driven to uncover the Reapers’ weaknesses, and Katie (Maddie Hasson), a resilient family friend skilled in combat. Together, they navigate the desolate landscapes, confronting not only the monstrous threats but also the psychological toll of their mission. Their path leads them through abandoned urban sprawls and subterranean tunnels, each step fraught with danger and uncertainty.

Elevation delves into themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the unyielding human spirit in the face of extinction. While the film offers intense action sequences and a unique premise, it has received mixed reviews. Critics have noted its similarities to other post-apocalyptic narratives, suggesting that despite its thrilling moments, the film struggles to establish a distinct identity. Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Will has been described as somewhat subdued, whereas Morena Baccarin’s performance as Nina brings depth and complexity to the ensemble. The film hints at potential for future installments, though it may need to further distinguish itself to captivate audiences fully.

Released on November 8, 2024, Elevation offers a high-stakes exploration of survival against insurmountable odds, set against the majestic yet unforgiving backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
