Adrift (2018)
Adrift (2018), directed by Baltasar Kormákur, is a survival drama based on the true story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, a young couple whose sailing adventure turns into a harrowing fight for survival. Starring Shailene Woodley as Tami and Sam Claflin as Richard, the film is set in 1983 and follows their journey as they attempt to sail from Tahiti to San Diego.
The film begins by showcasing their blossoming romance. Tami, a free-spirited traveler, meets Richard, an experienced sailor, in Tahiti. They quickly fall in love, and Richard invites Tami to join him on a sailing voyage across the Pacific Ocean. Things take a terrifying turn when they sail directly into a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane, Hurricane Raymond. The storm devastates their boat, leaving it severely damaged and Richard critically injured.
In the aftermath, Tami awakens to find the boat in ruins and Richard unconscious with life-threatening injuries. With no means of communication and thousands of miles from land, Tami must summon her strength and resourcefulness to keep both of them alive. She patches up the damaged boat as best she can, devises a way to navigate using a sextant and a watch, and survives on limited rations while enduring isolation, grief, and physical exhaustion.
Throughout the film, flashbacks reveal Tami and Richard’s relationship, adding emotional weight to her determination to save them both. The narrative is interwoven with scenes from their past, highlighting their love and the shared dreams that motivate Tami to push forward despite the overwhelming odds.
