Gods of Egypt

Gods of Egypt (2016) is a visually ambitious fantasy adventure directed by Alex Proyas that reimagines ancient Egyptian mythology in a stylized world where gods tower over humans and wield supernatural powers. The film’s lavish CGI landscapes and elaborate action sequences create a distinctive, if historically inaccurate, interpretation of Egyptian cosmology.

The story follows mortal thief Bek (Brenton Thwaites) who forms an unlikely alliance with the fallen god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) after the ruthless god of darkness Set (Gerard Butler) murders his brother Osiris and seizes Egypt’s throne. Together, they embark on a perilous journey across fantastical realms to defeat Set, restore order to the kingdom, and resurrect Bek’s beloved Zaya (Courtney Eaton).
Despite its spectacular visual effects and imaginative world-building, Gods of Egypt faced significant criticism for its predominantly white cast portraying Egyptian deities—a controversy that overshadowed its release.

The film underperformed commercially and received negative reviews for its convoluted plot and wooden dialogue, though it has since found an audience among viewers who appreciate its unapologetically over-the-top spectacle and creative, if historically dubious, take on Egyptian mythology.
